To reupholster or not to reupholster?

When it comes to your beloved sofa, there are a number of factors in trying to decide whether to buy a new 3 seat sofa, possibly a couple of chairs and a footstool or simply reupholster your existing 3 piece suite.

What is your budget?

Reupholstery can be a cost effective way of sprucing up your old sofa and with the right choice of fabric (or fabrics) your friends won’t believe that it is the same piece! Have a look at some of our before and after images to get an idea of what can be done with a little imagination

How old is your sofa?

Generally speaking, the older your sofa, the better made it is likely to be. Of course this is not a steadfast rule and there are many other things to bear in mind. For example, what is made from? We only use solid hardwood beech frames, because quite simply these are the best type of material to use. If your sofa is made from MDF or plywood, reupholstering it may cost more than the original cost of the sofa so this may not be the best course of action. Also worth considering is where the sofa was made. Is it a cheap import made to a price point or a quality British made sofa? Again, not ALL imported sofas are cheap and not ALL British made sofas are better quality than those from abroad, but sometimes the country of origin and the methods used to build your sofa can play a part in determining its durability.

What look are you trying to achieve?

The great thing about reupholstering is that if you don’t have the budget to have a brand new bespoke sofa made, you can still get a great look by having your existing sofa reupholstered. You can pick and choose the style, colour and texture of the fabrics you want to use. By using someone like Designer Workshop, we can use our upholstery expertise to help guide you with which colours work best together and to determine whether things like rub counts need to be considered – is it an occasional sofa or one that is used every day, with the kids, the family dog AND cat clambering all over it?

The uniqueness factor

There is something supremely satisfying about sitting/lounging/lying on your sofa with the knowledge that no one else in the world quite has a sofa like yours. By picking and choosing your own fabrics to reupholster your existing sofa you can be sure that your sofa is one of a kind.

Doing your bit for the environment!

We are constantly being reminded how wasteful we are and that we should recycle more. Landfills are being maxed out, carbon footprints are going through the roof and so on. Well, pat yourself on the back. By reupholstering your sofa, not only have you reduced the carbon footprint by not having a new sofa shipped half way round the world, you’ve also prevented your old sofa going to the local tip and using even more resources having it disposed of. You environmentalist you!
